--- name: "prose" description: "Plain answers and clean prose wherever prose lands: a yes, a no, a number or I do not know first, the measurement in place of the adjective, a re-pitch when a reply did not land, the catalog of AI tells cut from every surface, and a document written in its one mode, sentence by sentence. Use when answering a question or reporting a result, when the owner says a reply did not land, before any prose lands, and when writing a document, a README, a PR description or a commit message; and whenever you are about to write \"significantly\", \"much faster\", \"should work\", \"generally\" or \"nearly all\"." --- # Prose prose is the habit for the moment prose is about to land: a reply, a report, a review finding, a record's section, a commit message, a PR description, a document. It writes no record of its own, applies on your own judgment and is never announced. This page owns the answer: what a question gets first, the measurement in place of the adjective, and the re-pitch when a reply did not land. Before any prose lands, cut the tells [tells.md](tells.md) catalogs; a document, a README, an RFC, a PR description or a commit message is written by [documents.md](documents.md) as well. Greenline's paths and commands for this skill stand on its references page, [references/greenline.md](references/greenline.md): read it when the work lands in the workspace. A known name, path, definition or explanation is answered with that answer itself and the repository evidence behind it, with no yes/no prefix and no invented uncertainty; a number stays required for a quantitative claim, not for every fact. The process is not the answer: report what is true, not the tools you are about to run, unless the owner asked how you work. Answer first, then the view: show-me decides what form the answer takes, after the answer. Where a claim enters a record, the measured number goes in with it. When the owner contradicts an answer you already gave, the reply is a fresh measurement, never the same sentence again: re-run the check, recorded where a change is open, quote the new outcome, and either name the benign difference that explains their result or correct the record plainly. A yes/no, quantity or unknown-result question has four permitted answers. 1. **Yes.** 2. **No.** 3. **A number.** 4. **I do not know**, and what you will do to find out. Anything else is a paragraph standing in for an answer. Lead with one of the four, then explain if explanation helps. ## Replace the adjective with the measurement An adjective is a claim you did not measure. A check you ran supplies the measurement, the verify step's where the change ran one: quote its recorded outcome, never an adjective in its place. | Instead of | Write | | --- | --- | | much faster | p90 fell from 10ms to 1ms | | nearly all users | 87% of accounts | | significantly better | 25 basis points | | a large test suite | 9,134 tests | If you cannot supply the number, the honest answer is the fourth one. ## Never - "should work", "generally", "in most cases", when you have not checked - a confident answer to a question the material cannot settle - an adjective where a count was available ## It's working if - A yes-or-no question gets a yes or a no in the first sentence. - A how-many question gets a digit. - An unknowable question gets "I do not know" rather than a hedge. - Claims about size, speed or proportion carry numbers. ## When a reply did not land When the owner says a reply did not land ("wait, I don't understand where you've got to"), re-pitch it rather than repeat it. Give a little context first: where the work stands and what led there. Then say the point in simplified technical English, one thought per sentence with its articles and its verbs. Use the domain's words as `GLOSSARY.md` defines them, following `GLOSSARY-MAP.md` to the right glossary where the repository has more than one.
